Plan your adventure in Queenstown, NZ

Updated: Sep 19, 2023

Nestled in the heart of New Zealand's South Island, Queenstown is a hidden gem that beckons adventurers and nature lovers from around the globe. This picturesque town, cradled by the Southern Alps and bordered by the pristine Lake Wakatipu, boasts an unparalleled location that is nothing short of spectacular.

Queenstown's reputation as the "adventure capital of the world" is well-earned. It offers a variety of things to do and explore for all types of tourists, like adrenaline-pumping activities (includes bungee jumping, skydiving, jet boating, hiking and world-class skiing in nearby mountains), vibrant restaurant scene and breathtaking views.

Activities in Queenstown

Bungy Jumping

Like most others, this was an activity on our bucket list, and we were so happy to finally cross it off. One of the most popular attractions in Queenstown is bungy jumping, especially at the historic Kawarau Bridge. Kawarau Bungy Centre is the world’s first commercial bungy jump, and it’s still a popular spot for thrill-seekers today. We decided to do a tandem jump (stick together for life!) and the jump was definitely a heart-stopping experience, as we leapt (pushed?) from a height of 43 meters and plummeted towards the river below. For those who are less daring, there are also other options available, such as a zip line or the swing.

The Remarkables

When we saw these mountains for the first time, we were awestruck by their multiple craggy peaks, a geographical formation like no other we had ever seen. The Remarkables mountain range towers over Queenstown, providing stunning views of the surrounding area. There are plenty of activities to do in the Remarkables, such as hiking, and mountain biking. In winter, the Remarkables is a popular ski destination, with world-class facilities and an excellent range of slopes for all skill levels along with snowboarding, snowshoeing and tobogganing.

The Gondola

The Skyline gondola is a must-do activity for anyone visiting Queenstown. It’s a cable car that takes you up to Bob’s Peak, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Remarkables. The gondola ride did remind us of the sea to sky gondola near Whistler, British Columbia but this experience truly surpassed our expectations. There are plenty of activities to do once you reach the top, such as hiking, mountain biking, and paragliding.

If you are on a budget, we recommend going to Queenstown Hill instead! It offers panoramic views of the town and Lake Wakatipu.

Parasailing

For those who want to experience the thrill of flying without jumping out of a plane, parasailing is a great option. Soaring above the water, enjoying breathtaking views of the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu we throughly enjoyed this thrilling activity. We still regret not getting the pictures/video package but the memory will never fade :) This was our last activity but the other two water activities mentioned below are equally exciting.

Shark Boat Ride

You will unfailingly spot the the Shark Boat once you reach the lakefront. A high-speed boat that designed to "swim" like a shark and performs high-speed turns and maneuvers is difficult to miss. While we couldn't get around to experiencing it, it would definitely be an adrenaline-fueled experience that combines speed, thrills, and stunning scenery.

Jet Boat Ride

Jet boating is another popular activity in Queenstown. The jet boat can travel at high speeds through shallow water, making it possible to navigate rivers and rapids that would be inaccessible by other boats. Definitely try it out if your time and budget permit.

Onsen Hot Pools

If you're looking for a more relaxing activity, the Onsen Hot Pools offer a unique experience. We were lucky to find reservations at the last minute, but we recommend booking early. Situated high on a cliffside overlooking the Shotover River canyon, the hot pools offer stunning views of the surrounding scenery. The pools are filled with natural spring water and can be enjoyed year-round. Hot tip - Book a slot around sunset to experience light and twilight!

Restaurants to try in Queenstown

Queenstown is a lively town with a bustling nightlife scene. There are plenty of bars, nightclubs, and restaurants to choose from, catering to a variety of tastes and budgets. The waterfront is also a popular spot for visitors, with plenty of cafes and restaurants overlooking the lake. We had to book some places fairly in advance to be able to get a table. Here are some recommendations:

  • Rata: Rata is a fine-dining restaurant that offers a contemporary take on New Zealand cuisine. The menu features locally sourced ingredients, with a focus on seasonal produce. The restaurant also has an extensive wine list, featuring some of the best wines from the region.

  • Fergburger: Fergburger is a must-visit for anyone visiting Queenstown. The burger joint has a cult following, and for good reason - the burgers are huge and delicious. There's always a line, but it's worth the wait.

  • The Cow: The Cow is a popular Italian restaurant that has been a Queenstown institution for over 40 years. The menu features traditional Italian dishes, including pizza, pasta, and antipasti. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, with a fireplace and wooden furnishings.

  • Madam Woo: Madam Woo is a Malaysian restaurant that offers a fusion of traditional and modern dishes. The menu features a range of options, from small plates to share to larger main dishes. The restaurant has a lively atmosphere, with colourful decor and a bustling kitchen. We enjoyed everything we ordered!

  • Botswana Butchery: Botswana Butchery is a high-end steakhouse that offers some of the best cuts of meat in town. This place was highly recommended to us by the locals but since we don't eat steak, we visited the restaurant for drinks as they have some of the best wines from New Zealand and around the world.

If you have time, it’s worth taking a day trip to Glenorchy and the Gibbston Valley wineries. Glenorchy is a small town located at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu and is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. The Gibbston Valley wineries are located about 20 minutes outside of Queenstown and offer a range of excellent wines to sample. We visited Mt. Rosa winery which is lightly off the beaten path, offering a unique position in Gibbston. A relaxed, rural setting nestled amidst rows of vines, surrounded by mountains and hillsides dotted with wild herbs and dramatic mountain landscapes is what you'll experience at Mt Rosa.

In Queenstown, adventure, natural beauty, and culinary delights converge to create an unforgettable experience. Whether you seek thrills, relaxation, or simply a taste of the extraordinary, Queenstown has it all, making it a destination that should undoubtedly be on every traveler's bucket list. And we cannot wait to visit again!
