10 must visit places in Lisbon, Portugal

Running through Sea-Tac International Airport on a rainy February morning heaving and panting with our masks on, we had no idea how much fun and adventure was in store for us in Portugal. This underrated country is till date one of our favourite countries in the world. We already covered the awesome Algarve region, but now we want to talk about our stay in Lisbon, a city with so much to offer that it blew our expectations out of the park!

Check out our Algarve blog post here, highly recommended!

We stayed in Martim Moniz which is a central location close to all the main neighbourhoods. You'll have easy access to Chiado, Alfama, Bairro Alto, Baixa, and Principe Real, ensuring that you're never too far from the city's most captivating spots. One of the most convenient ways to get around Lisbon is by using Uber. It's not only cost-effective but also a faster means of transportation that allows you to explore the city with comfort.

Tip: Grab a bica (similar to an espresso) and the iconic pastel de nata (egg custard) and walk around the cobbled streets to soak in the city's unique charm.

Lets check out all the areas we explored in the city during our 10 days trip. Since we were working as well during that time so our pace to explore the city was slower than a usual vacation, but ideally a week should be enough to explore the city. We began our adventure by hopping on one of the iconic trams. While tram 28 is the most famous, consider taking tram 24/12 or a similar route for a less crowded yet equally enchanting experience. These trams pass through key neighbourhoods like Baixa, Alfama, Chiado, and Graca.

Castelo de Sao Jorge - historic castle

Located on a hill overlooking Lisbon, Castelo de Sao Jorge is a medieval fortress that provides an unparalleled perspective of the city. As you gaze out from the castle's ancient walls, you can see the Tagus River, stretching from the modern marvel of the Ponte Vasco de Gama to the iconic Ponte 25 de Abril, which bears a striking resemblance to San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. The views from this historic castle are nothing short of magical during the daytime or at sunset. We also got to see beautiful peacocks. (Ponte is a bridge).

Baixa-Chiado

Baixa-Chiado, often referred to as the heart of Lisbon, is a neighbourhood brimming with history, culture, and charm. We started our exploration at Arco da Rua Augusta, a monumental arch that serves as a gateway to the bustling streets of Chiado. Next we went to see the Elevador de Santa Justa (Santa Justa lift) but instead of taking the elevator, we took the stairs behind it to go to Carmo Convent (the ruins of an old Gothic Church), this gives view of the city as well as the Elevador and you don't have to pay for the elevator. This unique vantage point offers not only stunning city views but also a chance to appreciate the contrast of Lisbon's historical and contemporary elements.

In Baixa-Chiado, visit Miradouro de Santa Catarina, a delightful terrace where you can relax and soak in more captivating views. For a truly memorable experience, head to Noobai rooftop at the Miradouro, which offers a perfect blend of panoramic scenery and delectable cuisine. Baixa-Chiado is where Lisbon's past meets its vibrant present, and every corner tells a story waiting to be discovered. (Miradouro is a viewpoint).

Bairro Alto

Next we went on the Bica Funicular (Elevador da Bica) connecting the Rua de São Paulo with Calçada do Combro/Rua do Loreto. This funicular railway line is maybe the most picturesque and goes up to the start of the Bairro Alto district.

This historic neighbourhood comes alive in the evening and there's no better place to immerse yourself in the city's vibrant nightlife. Wine lovers should check out ByTheWine where you have the chance to taste and savour wines from various regions of Portugal, each with its own distinct flavour profile. Beyond wine, Bairro Alto offers an array of experiences to suit every taste. Whether you're in the mood for cocktails, live music, or simply strolling the lively streets and soaking in the eclectic atmosphere, this neighbourhood has it all.

Alfama and Graca

We did a walking tour through the ancient streets of Alfama and Graca, which we found on Airbnb experiences. These neighbourhoods are steeped in Lisbon's rich history, where each cobblestone seems to whisper tales of centuries bygone. As you wander through labyrinthine alleys and narrow streets, you'll encounter glimpses of the past at every turn. Miradouro de Santa Luzia is a highlight, offering not only outstanding views but also a tranquil atmosphere that allows you to connect with the city's soul.

After our walking tour, we bought a bottle of vino verde (green wine, the first we had ever heard of) at Miradouro da Graca. Our vino verde recommendation is Gazella, one of the best we have had till date. Unlike many countries, Lisbon allows you to enjoy a glass of wine in public, making it the perfect way to unwind while taking in the charming surroundings. Alfama and Graca are an authentic slice of Lisbon, and your journey through these neighbourhoods will leave you with a deep appreciation for the city's history and culture.

Belem

A short tram or bus ride away from the bustling heart of Lisbon lies Belem, a riverside neighbourhood that offers a completely different perspective on the city. Belem is a historical haven, home to iconic landmarks such as Torre de Belem, a stunning fortress that once protected Lisbon's harbour, and Padrao dos Descobrimentos, a monument celebrating Portugal's Age of Exploration.

Mosteiro dos Jeronimos is another must-visit attraction in Belem. This grand monastery showcases Manueline architecture at its finest and offers a glimpse into Portugal's rich maritime history. Belem is where you can immerse yourself in the grandeur of Lisbon's past and marvel at the feats of exploration that shaped the nation's identity.

Avenida da Liberdade

Avenida da Liberdade, often dubbed Lisbon's Champs-Élysées, is a grand boulevard that embodies the city's blend of elegance and modernity. This is a great street to explore while enjoying your bica, from any of the numerous 'Banana Cafes' you will find here. For those seeking a unique and hidden gem, the Red Frog Speakeasy is a must-visit. This was one the first speakeasy we had ever visited, and it stood true to its prohibition-era origins. Step into a world of jazz-infused tunes, expertly crafted cocktails, and charming vintage decor adds to the allure, making it a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a memorable evening.

Another stop worth making along this street is Zenith. This chic and trendy eatery is renowned for its delectable cuisine and stunning aesthetics. Zenith's menu is a fusion of flavors and textures that cater to various tastes. We came here multiple times - brunch as well as dinner and we just couldn't get enough of it. We also did a photo shoot on this street, another one of the Airbnb experiences, the photos are amazing and a great memory to have.

Principe Real

Principe Real is Lisbon's trendy and hip neighbourhood scene, where the city's vibrant cultural and culinary worlds collide. It's a district that effortlessly marries historic charm with a cool and contemporary vibe. There are many unique dining and entertainment options here, one of our favourites was the Gin Lovers Bar, with an extensive gin menu and a cozy, relaxed setting, it's the perfect place to unwind and sample a variety of botanical-infused concoctions. For dinner we went to La Paparrucha, this restaurant combines stunning rooftop views with mouthwatering dishes, especially seafood. The culinary creations here are a testament to Portugal's gastronomic excellence.

Cacilhas and Sanctuary of Christ the king

Cacilhas is a charming small town offers a refreshing change of pace, with its laid-back atmosphere and distinct local charm. As you step off the ferry, you'll be greeted by picturesque waterfront views and a sense of serenity that contrasts beautifully with the city's vibrant energy. We took a stroll along the waterfront promenade, it's a perfect opportunity for a peaceful moment of reflection while gazing at the Lisbon skyline across the shimmering waters.

The Sanctuary of Christ the King statue, looks like a similar but smaller version of the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro and offers awe-inspiring views of Lisbon. The observation deck at the sanctuary allows you to appreciate the city's grandeur from a unique perspective, making it a captivating destination for photographers and anyone seeking great views.

Azure Tile Museum

For those with an appreciation for art and culture, the Azure Tile Museum (Museu Nacional do Azulejo) is a hidden gem that unveils the artistic beauty of Portuguese tiles. As you step inside the museum, you'll find yourself surrounded by a stunning collection of tiles that narrate the country's heritage and history. The intricate patterns and vivid colours of these tiles create a tapestry of stories, showcasing everything from historic events to everyday life in Portugal.
